1. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Livia Fălcaru and I’m a Romanian artist based in Bucharest. I’m currently studying graphic design at college and I’m mainly focused on illustration.

2. Why art?
First of all because it’s the most relieving thing for me. When i draw, i take a break from the real world and I’m only focused on that thing so it’s actually fun and it helps me relax. The second reason I chose art is that it best expresses my feelings and it’s the most beautiful way I can share myself with the world.

3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an artist?
I actually draw since I was very little but my earliest memory of wanting to be an artist I would say it’s from 7h grade when I was 12. I used to have a lot of sketchbooks and would always doodle in class. I didn’t realize I was actually good at drawing until my art teacher asked me why i didn’t choose to go to an art school. This made me decide that i will apply to an art school the following year. So in 8th grade i transferred there and started my journey as an aspiring artist.

4. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
I think my favourite subject would be portraits. I prefer this to other things like objects or landscapes because I consider that they are more expressive and I can share my emotions through them more accurately. I also enjoy drawing animals. My favourite medias are watercolor and markers/liners for traditional art but I also enjoy working fully digital.

5. How do you work and approach your subject?
I usually start from a hand drawn sketch or even a finished drawing that I scan and enhance digitally. Sometimes it happens that I do my entire artwork digitally. I think it depends on my mood.

6. What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?
I literally have tons of artists on my list. I guess my biggest inspiration is Frida Kahlo. I admire her as an artist and as a person. Being a successful female in those times was hard. I also like Art Nouveau artists such as Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt. Egon Schiele is also one of my favourites. I also have some contemporary artists and illustrators I admire: Tara McPherson, Natalie Foss, Dilkabear and Mister Finch. I’m also in love with Sergey Neamoscou’s photography and Helen Noakes’ jewellry.

7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
One of the best responses to my work so far was the collaboration with a well known publisher for illustrating a book. Another nice response was the featuring of my work on an art site. I also did a mural for a showroom in Bucharest which was really fun to do.

8. What do you like about your work?
I think the best part is sharing with others. I really enjoy seeing people’s reaction to my work and I appreciate when people give me feedback.

9. What advice would you give to other artists?
I don’t know if I’ve come to that level where I can give advice to others. I guess the best advice I could give is put your heart in everything you make and don’t compare yourself to others. Compete with yourself.

10. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
Well that is really hard to say. But I dream about having my own studio one day and simply make a living out of what I enjoy most.
