Astrid Stoeppel

Interview with artist Astrid Stoeppel —

1. Who are you and what do you do?
I’m a contemporary artist and live and work in Germany near to Munich. As a painter I have been working professionally for 10 years. Until 2019, I was also the managing director of our family retail business.

“Formation”

2. Why art?
The colors and the empty canvases make me forget everything else and stimulate my creativity. I love applying the pure colors and geometric shapes on canvas and creating a work spontaneously, that is aesthetic for me. A good job makes me very satisfied and calm.

“Wide colors 9”

3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an artist?
Very early! In elementary school when visiting an art museum.

“Yes”

4. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
I work abstract and in Pop Art style, preferably with acrylic paints and spray paint. In addition to canvas, I also paint on wood, vinyl or even on hubcaps for a charity auction. For a well-known series of wall sculptures, I use countless snippets of colored paper.

“The Dot”

5. How do you work and approach your subject?
I work spontaneously and on many different series for a change, but never on several paintings at the same time. I always apply color by color and gradually let the work emerge. Only with the last layer of paint, I decide whether it is good enough.

“Curves”

6. What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?
Cy Twombly, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama

“Diverging dots”

7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
The most valuable feedback for me are pictures from clients who send me a room view of newly acquired works in their living space. My work was also inspiration and part of many art lessons in primary schools in the UK and USA. That really touches my heart…

“Spraydots 3”

8. What do you like about your work?
Everything.

9. What advice would you give to other artists?
Every work that arises deep within you is a masterpiece. Only work for you, not for other people!

“Formation 12”

10. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
I live in Italy near by the ocean. Early in the morning I watch the sunrise on the beach, have a good coffee and then go to my studio to create art.

Artist Statement

I’m obsessed with bold and powerful colors arranged in geometric shapes. That’s me: clear and structured at work, but also always creative, curious, passionate and a bit imperfect. I’m inspired by the color itself and adore the purity. Every individual color gets my undivided attention. My works are painted color by color. In this way I fill the canvas step by step with dynamic, vitality and structure. My message? the time is moving so fast and our mind is strongly influenced by the media and social media. I would like that people stop their thoughts for a moment, calm down, start to follow the lines, go along with the circles, look at the dots and color fields in my works and feel the vibrancy and attraction of pure colors and common shapes.
