Interview with Rabecca Signoriello

1. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Rabecca Signoriello; I reside in New Castle Pennsylvania with my husband Anthony.  I am an artist, as well as a laborer. In the summer months I work full time as a laborer for Lindy Paving and then in the winter I get to be in my studio and paint.

2. Why Art?
I have always been interested in creating things, as a child it was cartoons. Then as I got into my teens my interests I began experimenting with anything from charcoal to stained glass. Now I feel art is a way of communicating my ideas, but mostly I just feel a need to do it.

3. What are your favorite subjects / media?
My favorite medium is oil. I was introduced to oils as an undergrad as well as the study of anatomy, so the figure is my favorite subject.

4. How do you work and approach your subject?
Lately I have been starting my paintings with a warm ground, but I feel like I don’t paint the paintings in the same manner.  I often approach my paintings by doing a sketch to figure out composition, and then find something that inspires me within the space I am creating such as the light or a shape that is falling over the figure.

5.What are your favorite art works, artist(s)?
My first favorite artist is one that I was introduced to as an undergrad was Pontormo. The movement in composition with placement of the figures and color as well as the mood that comes through is why I love all of his work. I have several more, but to name a few that had huge impact on me would be Vincent Desiderio and Margaret Bowland.

6. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
For me the best response is if the viewer stands in front of my work, looking and contemplating longer than a minute.

7. What do you like about your work?
I like that I am understanding how I want to use light, as well as having a stronger understanding of color.  The most fulfilling thing as I paint is learning something new.

8. What advice would you give to other artists?
My advice would be not shut out criticism.  I think you will learn more and have better paintings if you open yourself up to listening and then decide what to take and what to disregard.

9. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
My goals within the next five years are to be more active in promoting my work and to be represented by a gallery. Then the ultimate goal is to be able to paint full time.
