Dana Stefania Apostol — ARTIST

Dana Stefania

Interview with artist Dana Stefania Apostol —

1. Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Dana Stefania Apostol, I have 33 years old and I’m a painter, curently living in Bucharest, Romania.

2. Why art?
I think, in a way, that painting had chosen me as one of its creators. It’s about this feeling I found that i have in my core being, that I had to follow, it was beyond my control. The only way to channel this, is through art. Also, the creative process of painting gave me this freedom of self, and more. The feeling of being a creator is also very empowering, it’s a nice gift that I’m giving to my human mind. I know that I’m a part of something great, art itself. I like being here, on this art road that has proven to be close to immortality. I think art is the ultimate form of beauty, except nature, of course, and this world needs it, and I’m willing to help.

3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an artist?
Somewhere during my time in the kindergarden. I was drawing something, and the teacher championed me as a good example to the other children. I imagine that episode, feeling good at that age. Very often I would find myself drawing, loving colors and forms. I feel that I always knew about myself, that I am a painter.

4. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
I like surrealism, the weirdness of this existence, the unseen part of this reality. What is reality? It can be anything. My paintings showcase this, or at least I try.
As medias, I started painting in acrylic on canvas, now I’m painting in oil on canvas.

5. How do you work and approach your subject?
I’m not entirely sure how everything starts, images start happening in my mind, like always! Then I choose some of it, the ones that are making more sense to me at that particular moment, and are more in tune with specific feelings or states of mind that I’m in. Immediatily after, I start painting it. A lot of my paintings are representations of self, of feelings, states of mind. As an inside glimpse of my own creative process, when I’m painting two women simultaneously, both of them are me, or what’s going on inside of me at that time. It’s never enough for me to be depicted in only one body form. Is an unconscious way of self representation, that leads to this symbiotic process that i’m in, between my inner self, intuition force, my conscience. And all of this i try pouring it outside..on a canvas.

6. What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?
I love all artists who inspire me, they are like part of the same realm as me. One of my favourite painting is “The Swing” by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. I love Rembrandt.

7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
The best responses that I get, are from people who contact me, telling me that they are very impressed with my art, or a specific painting that I made touched their feelings, in a unique special way. In those moments, I know that what I’m doing is ok.

8. What do you like about your work?
I like that I’m creating it, that I feel how I’m in a constant evolution within it, and I feel that my art created its own little place in the world, like another small dimension, full of dreamy, unseen, otherworldly things going on.

9. What advice would you give to other artists?
To keep going no matter what.
